The Wilmslow Historical Society seeks to draw together those who have an interest in history – especially of Wilmslow and its neighbourhood – and to create a congenial social ethos in which this common pursuit may be fostered. Founded in 1969, we boast a membership of 100+ people attending regular lectures on a broad range of historic subjects spanning millennia and including local, national and international topics.
The Society has a distinguished history of conducting research and publishing its work. Following on from our work on World War I which featured all 273 local casualties and appeared widely on local notice boards, websites and magazines, we published a booklet giving a more detailed profile of the 129 men whose names appear on the brass panels in St Bartholomew’s Church, Wilmslow. We are still in the process of compiling an oral history of Wilmslow.
Some of our members have been part of a team called “Turing Town” which seeks to publicise and commemorate the work of Alan Turing who lived in Wilmslow from 1950 to 1954. The team has arranged for an original portrait of Turing which now hangs in the Library and prints of which are displayed in various locations around the area. Other forms of commemoration are actively under discussion. We are also hoping to arrange some trips in the coming year now restrictions are reduced.
Our lectures are held in the The Large Hall, United Reformed Church, Chapel Lane, Wilmslow, SK9 1PR, beginning at 8pm, normally on the second Wednesday of the month. Tea/coffee and biscuits are available from 7.30 pm, and lectures start at 8.00 pm.
